Introducing our new Dance Teacher, Old Scholar Kate Burnett (nee Burnell, Selwyn ’99)

Kate BurnettKate started in Reception at St Peter’s Girls’ School and at the end of Year 10 was granted a position at the National Theatre Ballet School under the direction of Marilyn Jones OBE. Kate spent two years studying a full-time Diploma in Classical Ballet at the school and following this also completed a year of study in Performing Arts (Cert. 4). Her St Peter’s Girls’ School cohort graduated in 1999. While at St Peter’s Girls she was a proud member of Selwyn House.

From 2001-2004 Kate worked for Walt Disney, traveling throughout Asia performing as a dancer in many shows. She performed in both Hong Kong and Tokyo Disneyland.

Whilst this was exciting and rewarding, she always knew she would return to Adelaide and her wonderful family here (her mum is in fact an old scholar too!). Kate came home and completed a Bachelor of Education at the University of South Australia.

Upon completion, Kate worked as a Primary School teacher at St Anthony’s School, however she was certainly not ready to hang up her dancing shoes. She also taught co-curricular Dance at Westminster School and SACE Dance at a private ballet studio.

For the past six years, Kate has been employed at St Aloysius College, both as a Year 5 teacher and also running co-curricular Dance and choreographing the musicals.

Last year she returned to the Saints community when her eldest daughter, Molly, started at the ELC. Her youngest daughter Audrey is also enrolled.

This year Kate returns to St Peter’s Girls in her dream role (Dance Year 8 – 12), in which she can combine her love of teaching and her passion for dancing.

Welcome, Kate!
